Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Sila Island Resort, we proudly stand at the forefront of environmental stewardship, not just in the Philippines, but globally. We are the only resort in the nation, and one of the select few worldwide, to power our entire operation with 100% renewable energy. This dedication to eco-consciousness extends to every facet of our resort.

We believe that the soul of our paradise lies not just in its natural beauty, but also in the rich tapestry of local culture and the vibrant community that calls this place home. Our commitment to cultural stewardship goes beyond mere appreciation; we actively integrate the essence of local traditions and lifestyles into the Sila experience.

WHAT WE’RE GROWING

FOOD SUBSTAINABILTY

We cultivate a diverse range of produce in our garden, including tomatoes, papayas, and eggplants, alongside herbs like basil, oregano, and rosemary. We also raise pigs and chickens, nourishing them with organic feed and repurposed food waste from our guests and staff. We source much of our fish from local fisherman who use sustainable fishing methods. This sustainable approach allows us to grow a significant portion of our food locally.

MARINE BIOLOGY

LOCAL GOVERNMENT COLLABORATION

For close to a decade, we’ve been working with local San Vicente government departments and officials to stop dynamite and compressor fishing. We’re also working with a marine biologist to survey area corals and local officials to establish a marine preserve and protected area around Sila Island. By protecting corals from further damage, overtime, we strive to increase local fish populations.

LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS

MINIMIZING SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

Sila avoids using plastic straws and utensils which are known to cause damage to the land and ocean environment. Sustainable and re-usable materials are used instead to prevent single use plastics ending up poisoning our ocean habitats. We ask that you don’t bring any single use plastic with you to the island. Thank you.

WE CARE FOR PEOPLE

BUILDING CONNECTIONS ACROSS COMMUNITIES

Located in Northern Samar, one of the most economically challenged provinces in the Philippines, Sila Island Resort has supported local communities in San Vicente for the past 7 years, providing food, building materials, school supplies, and financial assistance. Over 90% of our staff come from within 50km of the island, and for many, this is their first job outside of fishing or farming. Starting July 1, 2024, we will introduce a 1% environmental and community fee to reinvest in local San Vicente communities and environmental causes.
